Kyoto Agreement
The global warming poses an increasingly greater threat: climate models predict a rise of global temperature for up to 3.5 °C until the year 2010, if greenhouse gas emissions remain at the present level.
We are living in the time of the greatest climate change since 10,000 years and it influences greatly various ecosystems around us. The region of the Alps is especially sensitive to the increasing temperatures. Since 1880 the average annual temperature in Austria has increased by 1.8 °C, while the worldwide increase has been between 0.3 and 0.6 °C. This has lead to the increase in atmospheric precipitation in the Alps area. The problem is highly unlikely to disappear in the future; on the contrary, the intensity of rain and snowfall will be increasing.

The problem is that higher temperatures over the Atlantic Ocean cause more evaporation and this in its turn increases humidity of the air in Europe. Therefore natural disasters like floods and avalanches will appear more often if the mankind does not take active part in reducing CO2 emission.

In December 1997 the third Conference of the Parties happened in Kyoto (Japan) and the Protocol of Kyoto was introduced. The Parties that signed the Protocol agreed to the reduction of the greenhouse gases (6 gases in total, incl. CO2) by 2008 – 2012.

Environmentally friendly thermal insulation can have a great influence on the environment. The reduction of about 5 million tons of CO2 could be reached by thermal reconstruction in Austria alone. That is about one third of the total reduction of 16 million tons which should be reached in the area of household heating.

In other words: 40 % of the required reduction of CO2 (1 million tons per year), required in all sectors of the energy consumption, could be attained by thermal insulation alone. Therefore thermal reconstruction is not only important for the building industry but it also plays important part in climate protection. The motto is: Energy saving is our future!
