Flat Roof Insulation
Austrotherm XPS thermal insulation boards offer a variety of applications in flat roof constructions.

Inverted Roof – general information
The inverted roof is a flat roof construction; the main feature is that, unlike in the conventional flat roof construction, thermal insulation is laid above the moisture sealing. Only when insulation materials with practically no water absorption were developed that construction became possible. This roof construction has 3 main features and their interaction ensures longevity of flat roof construction.

Safety:
The protection of the support structure against changes in temperature and moisture has to be secured by a durable and moisture resistant sealing. It is important to protect the moisture sealing level with XPS thermal insulation against heat and freezing. Thus, in one easy step, you obtain additional moisture sealing level as well as thermal insulation level.

Contrary to conventional non-ventilated flat roofs the Austrotherm TOP® / Austrotherm XPS® thermal insulation boards allow practically no temperature changes influence the moisture sealing.

Furthermore, the moisture sealing is protected against any unintentional damage during the fitting phase. Flat roofs built according to the inverted principle have been approved for years and correspond with the „established rules of technique“.

Simplicity:
Straight division of supporting structure – moisture sealing and thermal insulation – all in one layer. A vapour barrier and a vapour pressure compensation layer under the moisture sealing are not necessary.

Economy:
Simple structure and durability - that is what makes inverted roof construction so successful. And it is XPS thermal insulation boards that make it so efficient in saving energy.

Thanks to its excellent insulation characteristics, the calculated value of the thermal conductivity is 0.035 W/mK, the thickness of XPS can be smaller in comparison to other thermal insulation materials. Therefore heating costs can be reduced with no costs to the environment.

Gravelled Inverted Roof
The simplest form of flat roof is gravelled inverted roof. Access to the roof is only necessary for inspection and servicing.

All-weather XPS insulation boards (frost resistant, mainly insensitive to water) are only covered with a filter fabric and gravel.

Terraced roof
This popular kind of inverted roof is not only used above roofs, it is also used above cellars, oriels, etc. The floor slabs can be embedded on a layer of gravel, put on a pad support or directly on XPS boards.

You can decide whether to use flagstones or terrace tiles.

Parking roof
Parking roof is a heavy load-bearing type of inverted roof. It is recommended to use insulation boards with high compressive strength, for example Austrotherm TOP® 50 / Austrotherm XPS® 50. The carriageway surface can covered with paving-stones, cast-in-place concrete slabs or ready-mixed concrete slabs.

Plus roof
Every year there is less and less land available for building, therefore we need to think of already existing buildings.

Technical and economical reasons are the most important when it comes to the decision. Nevertheless environmental awareness starts to play the leading role in decision making.

The plus roof is a special kind of inverted roof. It is mere a combination of non-ventilated roof and inverted roof. The plus roof is often applied to old roof constructions, which might be still solid, but their thermal insulation is insufficient nowadays. If the original roof construction is damaged the plus roof is a good possibility of simple and efficient reconstruction:
  • Remove the gravel layer
  • Lay down additional sealing sheets (according to the requirements)
  • Apply the XPS thermal insulation boards in the required thickness
  • Apply the protective non-woven fabric
  • Cover with gravel

Green Roof
Green roofs are very fashionable nowadays! They show people’s desire to bring in the nature into their homes. Green roofs can be used not only in the urban areas with dense housing, but also in office and industrial buildings.
Plants produce oxygen, regulate humidity, clean the air and create good microclimate. Green roofs have a high ecological value. The basis of green roof is inverted roof in combination with XPS insulation boards.

Inverted roof with extensive planting
Extensive planting include vegetation forms, which preserve themselves, grow and change their appearance without any help. They do not have to be irrigated or cut. This type of roof is walked on only for maintenance.

Inverted roof with intensive planting
The intensive planting contains lawn areas, trees and shrubs. The plant variety of these roofs can be compared to that of a land garden, and needs to be taken care of e.g. cutting, watering etc. This kind of flat roof is constantly walked on.

Sloping Roof
The Austrotherm EPS® Sloping Board is a simple insulation system for roof pitches1 of 1%, 1.5% or 2%.

All Sloping Boards are available in the following dimensions: 1000 x 500 mm, 1000 x 1000 mm, 1000 x 1250 mm

The standard thickness is 50 mm. The Austrotherm EPS® product specification (EPS-W20, EPS W25, EPS W30) depends on the loading.

Advantages of the new sloping roof system:
  • conventional standard size insulation boards are used as basis
  • only one single type of Sloping Boards is necessary to create the desired slope
  • easy laying
  • joint coverings eliminate thermal bridges

Easy laying
We prepare a laying plan for you. The handling is very simple: lay standard size Austrotherm EPS® boards and above them lay the Austrotherm EPS® Sloping Boards. Make a mitre cut diagonally of the Sloping Board for inside angles or intersections and lay the boards according to the laying plan.

1 According to the OENORM minimum slope for sealing work has to be 1.8 %.

Non-ventilated flat roof
The non-ventilated flat roof is a flat roof construction, where all necessary building components directly joint with each other. The main feature is that the moisture sealing is laid above the thermal insulation layer.
